EQ via empathy is the ability to make soft skills actionable by using empathy to connect the leader with their EQ.  EQ is great to have, but it’s not very useful unless you can use it as a means of effective leadership.  The connection of the leader to EQ through the effective use of empathy is an absolute game-changer, and the piece of the equation we’ve been missing!

Yes – assuming someone wants to learn and is willing to put in the practice.  Adult learners need two things to assimilate information: an awareness that there’s a knowledge gap and the desire to fill it and learn a new behavior.  Assuming these two things are present, then yes, empathy is absolutely a teachable skill!

Empathy as we usually think of it (an ability to feel what another is feeling) is and emotion, but we’re talking about actionable empathy.  Just feeling what another is feeling is only the first step to making empathy actionable but, like any other talent, once you have a feel for what it is and understand how to take action using empathy, it becomes a skill.  This means it’s something you can get better at with practice and dedication and, once made a habit, will absolutely change how business is done!

EVERYONE.  Although I work mostly with leaders (because they have the added responsibility of other people), this is something that EVERYONE should learn whether leaders, managers, or simply a ‘leader of one’!

The trick is to habituate it in a way that informs day-to-day interactions and decisions, both big and small.  It’s not enough to have empathy, you have to use empathy to make it actionable.  As anyone who’s been on a fitness regime knows it’s one thing to have a bike, treadmill, or weights, but quite another to use them!
