MY STORY
Hi, I’m Melissa,
I never expected my life’s work to center around empathy. But sometimes the work we are called to do comes from the moments that challenge us the most.
For as long as I can remember, music shaped my life. I was drawn to it completely—listening, practicing, performing. After winning my first French horn competition at 14, I knew music would be my future. I studied intensely, toured with orchestras across the United States and Europe, and experienced the extraordinary privilege of performing a solo in Rome.
“This is me” Coach, Speaker, and Empathy in Leadership Advocate”
Eventually, I accepted a French horn professorship and moved away from home to teach the craft I loved. I believed academia would be a place where passion and dedication were valued.
Instead, it became the moment that changed the direction of my life.
After being assaulted by a colleague, I found myself navigating a system that refused to listen. What followed were seven years of fighting within an institution that lacked the empathy to address what had happened. During that time I lost my job, my home, and the future I believed I had built.

When everything you’ve worked for disappears through no fault of your own, you begin asking questions most people never think to ask.
How could this happen?
How can someone lose everything when they did nothing wrong?
And most importantly—how do we prevent it from happening to someone else?
Those questions led me into years of study, research, and reflection on the human condition. I became deeply focused on one concept that had clearly been missing in my experience: empathy.
Still singing after all this time
I began exploring questions that would eventually shape my work today.
What is empathy, really?
Why do some people demonstrate it while others seem incapable of it?
Can empathy be taught?
And what role does empathy play in leadership and organizational culture?
That search ultimately led me to develop the work I now teach through EQ Via Empathy. I’ve devoted my career to helping leaders understand the role empathy plays in decision-making, communication, and culture. When empathy becomes a disciplined leadership skill rather than an abstract idea, organizations change.
Today, I work with leaders who recognize that the world is shifting. They understand that technical expertise and strategy alone are not enough to guide people through complexity. They are ready to lead with greater awareness of the human dynamics that shape every organization.
My mission is simple: to help create a more thoughtful, fair, and understanding world—one leader at a time.

FAQ'S
What sets you apart from all the other empathy coaches out there?
Many coaches base their work on opinions — I base my work on hard research, experience and fieldwork. Much of my work centers around leadership. I’m completing a second doctorate, this one in Interdisciplinary Leadership, and certificates in Leadership Psychology and Executive Leadership. My goal is to make the world a better place — one person {or leader} at a time.
Who do you work with?
I work with leaders who understand the need to take bold steps to create a brighter future. These people can see the writing on the wall. They know there’s no point in doing things the same way and expecting better results. They understand when it’s time to make a change, and are willing to take responsibility to create the best possible future for themselves and everyone around them.
Can I learn empathy?
Yes… and no. Most people already have empathy, they just don’t know how to use it. That’s where I come in. Some types of empathy can be honed like any other skill {yes, there’s more than one}. My job is to work one-on-one with leaders to show how empathy can supercharge their emotional intelligence skills for real-world results.
Where are you? How do you work with clients?
I’m based in Oklahoma and work with clients in a 1:1 coaching situation. For me, it’s important to see what your world looks like. This enables me to identify which of your strengths to capitalize on while learning how to integrate empathy and emotional intelligence into your leadership. Meeting face-to-face {not just via Zoom} is a must. I want to see how you work in your natural environment so I can deliver the best coaching possible.
I keep hearing everyone talking about needing empathy — empathy in sales, empathy at work, empathy with stakeholders. Is this what you’re talking about?
Yes, that’s part of it, but I approach empathy as a life skill. It’s not simply a tool for business. While it’s great to use at work, effective, actionable use of empathy connected with emotional intelligence creates better lives!
Which industries do you work with?
Although my background is in healthcare, technology, and education, empathy is something that can benefit leaders in every industry.
How long does this take?
There’s no short answer. The process depends on you. How much natural empathy do you already have? How much empathy and emotional intelligence do you regularly use? And how much work are you willing to put in?
