When empathy IS the leadership edge.
Imagine a market where the only certainty is change.
Oh wait, you don’t have to imagine it. We’re already there.
Government shutdowns, changing global roles, inflation, economic instability. I don’t say that to point fingers – this is the current state of affairs. If there’s someone out there that isn’t feeling the instability, I’d like to know who they are and how they do it. I know that last week as I was stranded in Los Angeles Airport overnight because of flight problems, I really felt it.
But what if the only sustainable competitive edge is building human connection right now?
Leaders who figure out how to apply empathy during uncertain times (like the ones we’re in) actually do two things: they stabilize the emotional climate, and align purpose with performance. Which is to say, they focus their people in a way that crystallizes vision and create a rock-solid foundation for everyone to achieve.
Here’s the thing: you’re not just managing the risk of a shifting world, you’re helping your people to build resilience. Change is inevitable. It’s how we respond to change that creates a good result – or not.
And I’m not the only one calling for empathy. Take a look at this Bloomburg article titled “Current Market Conditions Call for Leading with Empathy”:
Either organizations can become a statistic to unstable times, or they can thrive. We create the leadership superstars during uncertain times, so this is a massive opportunity that many are missing. Which would you choose?
When everyone else is reacting, you can lead change by leading with empathy. Starting now.
